Pseudomugil mellis — Allen & Ivantsoff, 1982
The Honey Blue-eye exists only in wallum heathland - the tannin-stained, acidic coastal dune lakes and slow streams of a narrow strip of southeastern Queensland between Brisbane and Fraser Island. It has been documented at just 18 scattered localities. Brisbane's suburban sprawl is the primary threat, compressing already fragmented habitat; invasive mosquitofish have established themselves throughout the range and their impact on populations is not yet fully understood.
These fish trace to the Kangaroo Creek locality through breeding stock acquired from Marcel Wuethrich. With P. mellis, locality isn't just a label - populations are genetically structured by drainage, and mixed-locality fish lose something that can't be recovered. These fish are not collected from the wild.
Ethically bred. Occasionally available.
