Callichthyidae · Brazil & Bolivia (Rio Guaporé / Río Iténez)

Hoplisoma caudimaculatum — (Rössel, 1961)

This species is listed as Least Concern, and that listing is doing a lot of work. The assessment covers the whole Guaporé-Iténez drainage on the Brazil-Bolivia border, which is big enough to keep a widespread fish off the threatened list. The headwaters tell a different story. A 2026 survey of 21 streams in the Rondônia portion of the basin found that almost none still had more than 70% forest cover in their catchments, and the worst sites were under 3%. Canopy cover fell as forest loss rose, and the insect communities shifted toward tolerant generalists.1 Those small shaded headwater streams are exactly where corydoradines live. A category assigned across an entire drainage says very little about what is happening in any one of them.

The fish you're looking at were bred here in Eugene, Oregon - not collected from the wild. This species still reaches the hobby mostly as wild imports. It doesn't have to.
