Aspidoras cf. sp. CW216 — undescribed
This fish doesn't have a confirmed scientific name. It was originally imported as Aspidoras kiriri — a described species from coastal drainages in Bahia state — but subsequent identification work suggests it's more likely an undescribed species provisionally assigned CW216. The distinction matters: it may represent a lineage science hasn't formally documented yet.
Either way, the habitat is the same. Bahia's Atlantic Forest streams are among the most degraded freshwater systems in South America. The Atlantic Forest has lost over 85% of its original cover,1 and the small, clear-water drainages these fish come from are squeezed between sugarcane, cattle, and eucalyptus.2 An undescribed Aspidoras from a collapsing biome is a fish that could disappear from the wild before it even gets a name.
The fish available here are F1 — first generation bred in captivity from wild-caught stock. That lineage is documented.
Sorry but these are so active that photos are difficult. I will try to add more.
