Ancistrus sp. L519 "Rio Itenez"

This species has no formal scientific name. It's known only by the code L519 and by its honeycomb pattern, which is different on every fish. It comes from the Río Iténez in Bolivia - the same border river the Brazilians call the Guaporé - and it reached the hobby in an unusual way. A handful were collected on a private expedition around 2018, bred out, and that was it. Because Bolivia has no commercial ornamental-fish export, essentially every L519 in the trade descends from that small founding group.¹ No wild pipeline is drawing on the river to supply demand.

That's the good news and the catch at once. The wild population isn't under collection pressure, but the captive one rests on a narrow genetic base - an undescribed fish with no conservation status, from a drainage under steady agricultural pressure, held together by breeders. Keeping the line healthy means keeping it genetically broad, not just alive.
